Unfortunately, it is rare that animals die peacefully during their sleep. One day, your companion will become old or very sick. You will need to make the hard decision that is euthanasia. We understand that it is very painful to put an end to your relationship with your pet after many happy years. It is for that reason that we always proceed with the deepest respect.
First, euthanasia must be approved by the veterinarian. We do not proceed with a euthanasia if the animal is healthy; we will suggest other solutions. If the euthanasia is approved, we will then schedule an appointment. It will be your decision if you wish to be present with your pet during the euthanasia or not.
We always administer a sedative in order to reduce the stress of your pet during the manipulations. You will be able, if you wish, to hold your pet in your arms until the end . Furthermore, we install an intravenous catheter that allows us to make the injection with minimal contention.
During the first stage of the injection, your pet will softly fall asleep without pain. After or during the injection, your animal will become soft and his/her heart will stop. After the injection, the veterinarian will listen to the heart in order to confirm the passing. In some cases the animal may show muscle or respiratory spasms even if the death has occurred. We will leave you with your pet for a few minutes in order to make your final goodbyes. We recommend that someone else drives you home.
Different options exist for the disposal of the body. You may choose between a group cremation or an individual cremation. The individual cremation will allow you to keep the ashes. You will also have options for the urn. A souvenir paw print can also be made at your wishes. Please contact us if you want to discuss different options before your appointment.
